Lauburu
About the logo
The Basque cross, Lauburu, was chosen as the logo and name for Lauburu languages for its significance to its founder, who was born in the Basque Country in Northern Spain.
It is an ancient Celtic symbol in the Basque region used for 200 years BC as well as in other ancient cultures.
Lauburu in Basque means four heads. As Imanol Mujica, a Basque intellectual suggested, its meaning is related to the natural elements of the earth, air, fire, and water.
The colours of the Logo were also carefully chosen to represent the blue for the sea in the Bay of Biscay and the green for the mountains of the Basque region.
The logo was adapted by Sandra Flitcroft using the Basque ancient format for the lettering.
Coincidentally, Yorkshire shares many cultural features with the Basque Country. Not far from Otley, where Lauburu Languages is based, you can find ancient stone carvings on Ilkley Moor, with an apparently similar meaning to the Basque ancient symbol.
In Lauburu Languages we want to believe that cultures have more in common than differences. The Basque Country also shares very similar traditional dancing. Do the Basque dancers resemble the Morris dancers? In 2013, I spoke about it in article published in the Ilkley Gatzete and Wharfedale. Later it was published in a Spanish website.
Although I am obviously very proud of my origins in the Basque country, the Spanish language and culture that I love to teach is that for the whole of Spain and the whole of the Spanish speaking world.
